Earth
Part of the Elemental Alchemy Series
Formed from the same clay as Air and Water (the other two pieces in the Elemental Alchemy triptych), yet lifted through openness and restraint, Earth was shaped to hold mass and grounded strength.
Earth is the body that holds, supports, and remembers — shaped by pressure, time, and transformation within every layer. It is the foundation beneath motion, the enduring presence that carries weight and form through change. In this vessel, I sought to embody that grounded strength, allowing surface and structure to reflect the slow shaping forces that leave their marks through accumulation rather than sudden impact. Its textures and edges speak to endurance — a record of pressure, resilience, and the quiet permanence of what remains.
The Alchemy of Earth
Beneath the surface, chemistry and matter converge. Minerals settle, fuse, and crystallize within heat — each layer responding to pressure and time in the kiln’s fire. What appears solid is the result of movement slowed and compressed, energy held within form.
Into this alchemy, I return the ash of fallen oak limbs gathered from my own land — remnants of trees once rooted deep in the earth that gives rise to clay. Through flame, wood becomes mineral; what once grew upward is carried back into elemental form.
These surfaces are not applied, but forged — iron darkening, oxides blooming, textures emerging through compression and heat. The firing becomes an act of geological time condensed: clay becoming stone, ash becoming body, transformation embedded within every layer.
For me, Earth represents grounding — an enduring presence that steadies wild motion and absorbs upheaval, transforming turmoil into strength and clarity.
Together with Air and Water, this piece completes the first triad of Elemental Alchemy — a study of transformation across matter, movement and emotion.
Each vessel stands as an individual meditation, yet when seen together, they breathe as one — a conversation between solidity, flow and breath.
